The Traveler’s Photo School: Prague

A beginner-friendly photography workshop in Prague, designed for travelers who want to understand their camera and develop their own way of seeing.

A five-day photography workshop in Prague for travelers who want to learn the fundamentals, explore the city, and start seeing the world like a photographer. We’ll move through Prague in a small group, shooting together, breaking off to explore on our own, and coming back together to share the experience - equal parts learning, travel, and fun! Think photo camp for adults.

Learning To See

Unlike other art forms like drawing and painting, cameras show us a version of our shared reality.  We can literally show other people what we see when we look at the world around us and that’s what I want to teach you to do.

How I Teach

I take a story-first approach to learning which means slowing down and being intentional about how we shoot.  Each day we’ll tackle a new technical skill together and do group exercises to reinforce your knowledge.

Your Story

This workshop is all about learning to capture the version of Prague that you discover and exploring the city on your own is as important as what we do as a group.  I want you to leave Prague not just knowing how the camera works, but how you make it work for you.

The Rhythm of the Week

Enjoying Prague Together

Many of you will be traveling alone to attend this workshop, and five days on your own in a new city might sound intimidating. That’s why there are multiple social activities in the evenings for you to relax and enjoy Prague as a city instead of as a classroom.

Prague is a vibrant place with more bars, restaurants, and coffee shops than you could ever experience in a week, and I’ll show you some of my favorite places in the city for beer, Czech food (and not Czech food), and general nightlife around the city.

Is This For You?

This will likely feel like a good fit if you:

  • are new to photography, returning to it after time away, or have some basic knowledge but want to deepen your understanding

  • enjoy learning by doing rather than through heavy instruction

  • value small groups, conversation, and shared experience

This may not be the best fit if you:

  • are looking for a fast-paced tour or a rigid itinerary

  • want highly technical or advanced instruction

  • are looking to be led to the most Instagrammable spots in Prague

This workshop is designed for people who are curious, open, and interested in slowing down to learn something thoughtfully. You don’t need prior photography experience — just a willingness to pay attention, participate, and explore.

About Me

Discovering Photography

Nothing has changed the way I see the world more than learning to use a camera — and nothing makes me want to pick one up more than being somewhere new. For years, I assumed I’d work solely as a photographer. But while studying, I began teaching on the side, and that detour changed everything.

Changing Gears

I loved photography, but the solitary nature of the work didn’t fully suit me. Teaching did. It meant being out in the world with a camera alongside curious, motivated people — shooting, talking, and figuring things out in real time. It became clear that this shared process was what I cared about most.

Moving to Prague

After a decade of professional work in Los Angeles, I moved to Prague in 2020 to pursue my master’s degree at FAMU. Along the way, through teaching and guiding, I discovered I have a knack for helping people feel comfortable in unfamiliar situations — whether that’s navigating a new city or finally taking their camera off auto mode.

Why I do this

Teaching photography in a small-group travel setting brings together everything I value: creativity, exploration, and community. This workshop is for people who want to learn by doing — adapting to real situations and using their camera to tell a story, not just dial in the “right” settings.

If that sounds like your kind of experience, you’ll probably feel right at home here.

FAQ

  • No prior photography experience is required. This workshop is designed for beginners as well as for people returning to photography after time away. We start with the fundamentals and build gradually, focusing on understanding how your camera works and how to use it intentionally rather than memorizing settings or shortcuts. If you’re comfortable using a camera at a basic level and curious to learn more, you’ll feel well supported throughout the week.

  • You’re welcome to use any camera that allows manual control, including mirrorless or DSLR cameras. The workshop focuses on understanding light, exposure, and composition, so having access to basic settings like aperture, shutter speed, and ISO is important. If you’re unsure whether your camera is a good fit, feel free to reach out ahead of time — I’m happy to help you decide.

  • Adobe Lightroom is the industry standard for photo editing and file organization and is available for under 20€/month. The software runs well on laptops and tablets alike. Alternatives are available so please get in touch with any specific questions about gear. A few other free apps for transportation and communication during the workshop will be sent with your welcome packet.

  • Group size is intentionally small, typically between six to eight participants. This keeps the workshop personal and conversational, with plenty of time for individual attention and shared discussion. Keeping the group small also allows us to move through the city comfortably and adapt the pace to the people in it.

  • Changing weather is part of how a city reveals itself, and we welcome it as part of the experience. Rain, fog, and shifting light often slow things down and invite us to notice details we might otherwise pass by. When conditions change, we simply adjust our pace and focus, letting the city show up as it is. This workshop is about learning to document real moments and experiences, rather than chasing the perfect postcard.

As a practical note, it’s always a good idea to bring a good raincoat, no matter the time of year.

  • It’s a balance of both. The workshop is structured and purposeful, with clear lessons and guidance, but it’s designed to feel more like a shared experience than a traditional class. We learn through doing — walking, observing, photographing, and talking things through together — so instruction stays grounded in real situations rather than abstract exercises.

There’s also time built in for individual exploration and practice, so students can follow their own interests and curiosities. The goal is for everyone to go home with photographs that reflect their experience of Prague, rather than a set of images that all look the same because they were made together in class.

  • The workshop includes all instruction, guided walks, group discussions, and image reviews over five days, along with pre-workshop guidance and a detailed schedule. There are also a few optional, informal evening meetups during the week — purely social and always optional.

Travel to and from Prague, accommodation, meals, and personal expenses are not included, giving everyone flexibility in how they stay, eat, and spend time outside the workshop.

  • Plans change, and I try to be transparent and reasonable about that. Cancellations made more than 30 days before the workshop start date will receive a full refund. Cancellations made within 30 days of the start date are non-refundable, as spots are limited and difficult to fill on short notice.

That said, reservations cancelled within the 30-day window can be transferred to any future workshop in Prague at no additional charge, subject to availability.

  • We’ll meet at a the same local coffee shop each morning for an introduction to the day’s topic before setting out together to a different part of the city for our group exercise.

  • I offer two-hour classes focused more on tips and tricks and based around shooting better photos on vacation. It’s bookable through Airbnb HERE or directly through me HERE. These classes typically run Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Private classes can be arranged for an agreed-upon fee.

Former Students

“Michael provided a great combination of both theory and practice, and he quickly had me capturing better images and thinking more about my objectives for the images I was capturing”

Jay, San Francisco CA

“I’ve always found photography concepts to be pretty confusing, but Michael had a knack for breaking everything down into simple, easy-to-understand terms. His patient and engaging style really made a difference, and I could feel my confidence with my digital camera growing in just a couple of hours.”

— Klairi, Derby UK

“Michael is a fantastic instructor — patient, encouraging, and deeply passionate about what he teaches. I joined this experience with zero background in photography, and he completely opened my eyes to a new way of seeing the world.”
